AYANA ROSS is a figurative oil painter whose work combines traditional painting techniques and figurative realism with intricate patterns and decorative design, creating a visual language that evokes nostalgia, elevates her subjects, and provides deeper narrative context. Ross captures everyday people and moments, layering stories that examine identity, race, and a broader evaluation of our societal values while drawing connections between ordinary experiences and universal lessons.
Among Ross' accomplishments include receiving the Spring 2024 Yale University Mellon Arts and Practitioner Fellowship; and the Pittsburgh Foundation's 2024 Eben Demarest Award given to outstanding artists; former recipients include contemporary sculptor Yanko Kennedy and painter Jackson Pollack. Ross was awarded the second Bennett Prize in 2021, a national award given to women figurative artists. As part of the Bennett Prize, Ross's work was exhibited in several museums in the US.
Ross' paintings are in institutional and private collections, including members of boards at The High Museum in Atlanta and The Mint Museum in Charlotte.
A Georgia native, Ross currently lives and works in the metro Atlanta area. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design (2021) and a Master of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2014).
